The Innovation Lab for Crop Improvement is seeking a postdoctoral associate who will be housed in the Department of Global Development at Cornell University.
Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
Overview
The Cornell University Department of Global Development is searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in research on priority setting for crop improvement in agriculture. The position will be supporting The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Crop Improvement (ILCI) to develop and implement an impact centered priority setting framework for crop improvement programs, provide research support to partner programs, and collaboratively develop and adapt priority setting tools and methods tailored for National Agricultural Research Institutions (NARIs) in ILCI target countries.
Project Summary
ILCI partners with scientists and stakeholders around the globe to co-develop tools, technologies and methods in crop improvement that address local concerns and focus on community impact. Our goal is to listen to NARIs as they define their own goals and drive advancement to breed resilient crop varieties that stand up to pests, diseases and climate change. We believe that if national programs play a central role in designing innovations that prioritize/target their unique needs, then these solutions will be more sustainable in the long-term. Our work fuses cutting-edge science and collaboration to make food more accessible, reliable, and responsive to the diverse needs around the globe.
Anticipated Division of Time
The postdoc will work with the interdisciplinary ILCI priority setting team, co-led by Hale Ann Tufan and Miguel Gomez. We are seeking a full-time researcher with an agricultural economics background to primarily support ILCI Centers of Innovation (CoIs) to:
Framework development (50%)
- Lead the impact centered priority setting framework development, process and metrics related priority setting for crop improvement.
Tool/Method Development (25%)
- Collaboratively develop priority setting tools and methods (e.g Ex-Ante cost benefit analysis) targeted for CoIs.
- Adapt existing crop improvement priority setting related tools such conjoint analysis, value chain analysis, survey development etc, as well as broader research design and sampling for CoIs.
Research Support (25%)
- Broadly support CoI teams in priority setting related research including developing research questions, designing tools, analyzing data and publishing.
As cross cutting themes (gender, youth, resilience and nutrition) are critical to all ILCI work, the successful candidate will work closely with the ILCI cross cutting team to ensure the priority setting framework, tools and process integrate these themes. The successful candidate will have a background working in one of these research areas to enable effective collaboration. The position will require international travel for meetings and fieldwork.
Requirements
- PhD in agricultural economics or related field;
- Demonstrated field research experience in an international agricultural research for development focused project or program;
- Demonstrated research experience on gender, nutrition or resilience focused research;
- Desirable: Experience working in impact evaluation or monitoring learning and evaluation related topics;
- Desirable: Experience in both qualitative and quantitative gender research methods;
- Desirable: Experience working in a CoI host country;
